Umpire Information

Basic Information

 

The male and female shall wear:

 

A.      A powder blue or navy blue, short-sleeved polo shirt. ASA letters are worn on the left chest of the polo shirt.

B.      Approved navy blue or heather gray slacks with navy or black socks.

C.      The approved navy cap with white ASA letters, trimmed with light blue on the front and the US Flag positioned on the left side, with the stars forward.

D.      The approved navy blue ball bag with ASA letters to be worn with either navy blue or heather gray slacks. The approved gray ball bag with ASA letters may be worn with heather gray slacks.

E.       The approved navy jacket with white letters on the left chest.

F.       Black shoes and belt.

G.      A t-shirt is optional to wear under the powder blue or navy blue polo shirt. If a t-shirt is worn it  shall be a white t-shirt under the powder blue polo shirt and a navy blue t-shirt under the navy blue polo shirt.

H.      The plate umpire in fast pitch shall wear a black or silver mask, with black or tan padding and throat protector. (An extended wire protector may be worn in lieu of a throat protector on the mask). 


Umpire’s Pre-game Responsibilities:   
Check in with UIC 20 minutes ahead of game time.                                 
Report  to the playing field at least 20 minutes ahead of game time.      
For legality and safety, inspect the playing field, bats, batting helmets and cleats.      
Pre-game meeting, five minutes before the scheduled starting time. 

Head Coach shall be responsible for verifying to the plate umpire that the lineup card is correct all players and equipment are legally equipped and in compliance with all ASA rules
   
Note: Umpires will check bats, batting helmets and cleats on each game.  If a team has back to back games, umpires will check the first game only.      
The field umpire will keep the official scorecard.  At the end of game, have the coach of the winning team, sign scorecard.      
At the same time have the coach of the losing team verify the score. This will be the official score.  

 

Ejections:
Not good for anyone involved in the game.  As an umpire, use all options, to keep all involved in the game.  Ejection should be your last option.  If you have an ejection you must notify the UIC at the conclusion of the game.

Note: If anyone involved in the game asks for your name, refer them to the UIC of the day.

 

Game time keeping:

Umpires are to use timers on the backstop.

No cell phones, no watches on umpire’s wrist.
